  • In groups, make lists of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs for each painting. Use these words in creative writing. Read aloud.
  • Choose one painting and write a detailed description of what is happening. What part of the story did the artist depict? Use your imagination to describe what happened just before this scene and just after. In addition to people, what things are included? How do they help tell the story?
  • Who are the main characters in these paintings? What character traits do they have (for example, courage, patience, creativity, leadership, compassion, etc.)? What do you see in the painting that tells you they have these traits? (Hint: look for size, facial expressions, and body language.)
  • How are the images organized to make the stories interesting? Describe the particular lines, shapes, colors, textures, and values (lights and darks) used. Discuss the use of contrast, movement, emphasis (focal point), rhythm, and repetition.
  • In Sugriva Takes Rama to the Mountain Cave, we see two scenes from the story. How is this like comic strips or graphic novels? Choose a different story and illustrate it this way.
