Seated Riffian

The Barnes Foundation

French artist Henri Matisse (ahn-REE mah-TEES) made this painting of a man wearing a yellow turban and shoes and a colorful coat who stares at us intently. Who is he? Where does he live? His feet are spread wide on a vibrant pink-red floor. Behind him are yellow curtains with vertical green stripes and a window full of bright blue sky.
