A showcase for recent American art as well as a survey of European painting, the Armory Show was met with both derision and enthusiasm. It revolutionized modernism in the United States--this lecture will describe how that happened.

Join Collab and PennDesign's Orkan Telhan for an illustrated lecture on how children play. Trained at the MIT Media Laboratory, Telhan will discuss his research with the LEGO Learning Institute and other forums exploring the educational and social components that motivate kids to be creative alone and with each other. The Assistant Professor of Fine Arts, Emerging Design Practices at the University of Pennsylvania, Telhan is an interdisciplinary artist, designer and researcher.

The acquisition of the Aperture Foundation’s holdings of work by American photographer Paul Strand presents the Museum with an opportunity to assemble the finest and most comprehensive Strand collection in the world. Join Peter Barberie, The Brodsky Curator of Photographs, Alfred Stieglitz Center, to learn more about the importance of this seminal acquisition, and the great twentieth-century photographer who defined the modernist possibilities of the camera and the photographic medium. The talk will be followed by a reception.

Take a stroll around the Museum and into the new Anne d’Harnoncourt Memorial Sculpture Garden to explore some of its outdoor artwork and landscape views. This one-acre site hosts two gallery areas, which currently contain the stone sculptures of Isamu Noguchi. The plantings along the lawns and terraces contain trees, shrubs, and perennials that support local wildlife and bloom at various seasons.

An Evening of Fado
The most-prized music of Portugal, fado (“fate”) is melancholy and often mournful. Fado’s stories of heartache and disappointment wrapped in guitar filigree will be reinterpreted for a special Art After 5 performance.

A Walk Through Time: Period Rooms
Past Museum Director Fiske Kimball’s vision of placing art in relevant architectural interiors resulted in the Museum’s period rooms playing an integral role in the interpretation of art on display within them. Wander back in time through a 13th century French Cloister, a 16th century Hindu temple, an interior from Holland's Golden Age, and several 18th century English drawing rooms for an intimate experience illustrating the evolution of styles in painting, furniture, tapestries and porcelain throughout the ages.

Location: Meet at the base of the East Entrance steps. The tour ends at the West Entrance.
Explore the life of artist Thomas Eakins (1844‒1916), who painted
The Gross Clinic
and lived in Philadelphia's Fairmount neighborhood, by visiting some of the sites that influenced his life and work. This bike tour focuses on Center City Philadelphia and lasts approximately 1.5 hours.
Following the tour, Pay What You Wish for Museum admission to see Eakins’s works up close in the Museum’s American art galleries (111 and Provident National Bank Gallery 118).

with John Ollman and Philadelphia artist Tristin Lowe. Ollman is the owner of the Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, one of the world's premier sources for self-taught art. Lowe is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice pushes low-brow, low-tech methods and materials toward unexpected ends. Together they will discuss Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz's collection of outsider art, how it was formed, and why Ollman pursued the artwork that Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz collected.
