Composed in 1951, Music of Changes was Cage’s first entirely indeterminate instrumental piece. Applying the I Ching (Book of Changes) to the compositional process, Cage created a work of pointed extremes and dense counterpoint. First premiered by David Tudor, Music of Changes will be performed a generation later by pianist Joseph Kubera, who will provide an unyielding and complete interpretation of a complex and virtuosic composition.

Since 1997, this Grammy-nominated wind quintet has carved out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, genre-blurring collaborations, and inspirational outreach programs. With two member composers and a deep commitment to commissioning new works, the group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while meaningfully bridging European, American, African, and Latin American traditions. Always a big hit in Philadelphia, the Imani Winds returns for a fifth time to PCMS with a program of works by Villa-Lobos and Harbison, and the Philadelphia premiere of a piece by Brian DuFord’s Variations on an Afro-Cuban Lullaby (Drume Negrita).

One of the “youngest stars of the guitar world” (New York Times), Jason Vieaux is a musician noted for virtuosic and stirring performances, imaginative programming, and uncommon communicative gifts. Having appeared five times already with PCMS, Vieaux has become a favorite of Philadelphia audiences over the past decade going back to his days as an Astral Artist. Recently he joined the faculty of Curtis Institute, and for his January recital featuring works of Bach, Britten, Visconti, and Dowland he will be joined by the talented soprano Sarah Shafer—an artist in her final year in Curtis Opera Program.

The Philadelphia Inquirer says of violinist Korbinian Altenberger, "His ability to rise and fall on a single tone is breaktaking... His expressivity is singular." A Munich native, he was recently appointed Principal Second Violin of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. For his Philadelphia Chamber Music Society recital debut, he will be joined by the superb Ignat Solzhenitsyn-recognized as one of today's most gifted artists and enjoying an active career as both conductor and pianist. Works by Schubert bookend this program, which also features two wonderful pieces by Rusian masters Schnittke and Shostakovich.
