Art and Social Transformation is an ongoing series of conversations, lectures and panel discussions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. These events explore the resonance of modern and contemporary art in our culture and society. The focus of this program is to investigate the transformative potential of artistic practice and to assert is role as a defining factor in our lives.
The series strives to elicit multiple perspectives by inviting the participation of artists, writers and curators, staging performances (music, theater and dance), and collaborating with experts from other fields of knowledge whose intervention might be relevant for the interpretation of the artists or works considered.
Art and Social Transformation allows the Museum to further the understanding of the relationship between artworks and the historical circumstances in which they were created, and thus to position art in the larger context of its time. The goal of this series is to encourage debate and discussion and to enhance our understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary art.
Many of the lectures are available as podcasts in Apple's iTunes.
The Art and Social Transformation Series, and accompanying podcasts, are made possible by the generosity of Dina and Jerry Wind.
