Landscape with Yellow Bush

1885
George Inness (American, 1825–1894)
Small scale reinforces the intimate feeling of this arrangement of delicate, muted color and enclosed space, hallmarks of Inness’s late style. The columnar form of the white tree trunk and its reflection in the water give structure to an otherwise nebulous group of advancing and receding areas of color. Landscape with Yellow Bush depicts a scene near Inness’s new home in Montclair, New Jersey, where he moved from New York City and would live and paint until his death in 1894.
