Dormition of the Virgin

c. 1425
Fra Angelico (Italian (active Fiesole, Florence, Cortona, Perugia, Orvieto, and Rome), first securely documented 1417, died 1455)
Mary appears infrequently in the Bible, although later Christian writers set down many details of her life and death. In this painting of her funeral, John the Evangelist (on the right) holds the golden palm that an angel brought to Mary to announce her coming death.
