Saint Francis of Assisi

c. 1470-1475
Bartolomeo Vivarini (Italian (active Venice), signed works 1450–1490)
Bartolomeo Vivarini was the younger brother and partner of Antonio Vivarini, whose painting Saint Bernardino of Siena is also in the Museum's collection. Bartolomeo's expressive rendering of anatomy, drapery, and marble floors contrasts sharply with his older brother's simpler style and reflects the influence of the great Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna (Italian, 1431-1506).
