Lorenzo Lotto’s account book records that in Treviso (near Venice) on March 7, 1544, the surgeon Gian Giacomo Stuer was billed ten ducats for a portrait of himself and his son Gian Antonio. The father’s expectations for his son’s future are shown by the surgical instruments he passes into the boy’s hesitantly outstretched hand.
