Christ Taking Leave of His Mother

c. 1530
Paris Bordone (Paris Pasqualino) (Italian (active Venice), 1500–1571)
This scene is drawn not from the Gospels but rather it is an imaginary meeting of Christ and the Virgin Mary. A seventeenth-century Venetian writer called the painting's unusual subject "a beautiful idea" that prefigures the meeting of the Virgin Mary and Christ in Paradise.
