Portrait of Girolamo Contarini

1570s
Paolo Veronese (Paolo di Gabriele Caliari) (Italian (active Verona, Venice, and environs) 1528–1588)
Girolamo Contarini (died 1577) was an admiral of the Venetian republic. His suit of armor and the battleship in the distance illustrate his high command. This picture was painted upon the admiral's retirement and was hung in the navy's headquarters; Venetian military and government offices were typically adorned with portraits of their former officials.
