Tura was the principal painter of the court of the ruling Este family in Ferrara. He undoubtedly met the Netherlandish master Rogier van der Weyden in Ferrara in 1450. The detailed drawings that Tura used in the preparation of this panel and its companions indicate that he may have learned Netherlandish drawing techniques directly from Van der Weyden.
