The Death of the Blessed Filippo Benizzi

1515
Niccolò Giolfino (Italian (active Verona), 1476–1555)
Saint Filippo Benizzi was a thirteenth-century holy man of the Servite order. His cult was popular from the 1200s but was not officially approved by the Church until 1515 (the year this picture was painted); he was not canonized (made a saint) until 1671. Here he is shown with the golden rays of the blessed. The panel was painted for a lost altarpiece for the chapel of Arnolfo de Arcolis in the Servite church of Verona, Italy.
