Virgin and Child with the Young Saint John the Baptist

c. 1520
Giampietrino (Giovanni Pedrini?) (Italian (active Milan and environs), active c. 1510–c. 1540)
Giampietrino took inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci's celebrated Virgin of the Rocks for this composition, seen most conspicuously in the playful interaction between the infants Christ and John the Baptist, and in the atmospheric detail of the background landscape.
