LabelRobert Campin based this image of Jesus on the Mandylion model; he was further inspired by the so-called Avignon Diptych, given by Pope Clement VI to the Duke of Normandy in the fourteenth century. Campin retained the diptych's composition and the gold background, which was common to Byzantine icons, but rendered Christ's head with the realism for which Netherlandish painters were renowned, working in microscopic detail and even showing individual hairs.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
