In the foreground, Roman emperors Arcadius and Honorius and Pope Innocent I examine the autobiography of Saint Alexis, a fourth-century nobleman who lived in secrecy and poverty under the stairs of his own house. In the background, the family mourns the dead saint, whose true identity has just been revealed.
