Saint Peter Released from Prison

1370-1371
Jacopo di Cione (Italian (active Florence), first documented 1365, died 1398/1400)
On the left an angel appears to Peter in prison, and on the right the same angel leads him out past sleeping guards. This small painting comes from a series of panels depicting the apostle's life. The panels formed the predella, or base, of the high altarpiece in the now-destroyed Florentine church of San Pier Maggiore, which was dedicated to Peter.
