The Raising of Lazarus

c. 1620
Jan Symonsz. Pynas (Dutch (active Haarlem and Amsterdam), 1583–1631)
Jan Pynas was an important history painter in Amsterdam. In this scene, Pynas focused on the emotional bond between Jesus and Lazarus. Pynas’s profile head of Jesus corresponds to traditional sources, but the artist was primarily influenced by a very similar version by Peter Paul Rubens of this period. The enlargement to the top and right side were recently analyzed and were found to be consistent with the materials and techniques of the rest of the painting.
