Blind Tobit and His Wife

The subject of this painting is from the Old Testament apocryphal book of Tobit. Tobit and his wife Anna are shown awaiting the return of their son Tobias, whom they had sent on a journey from Nineveh to Media to collect a debt. Tobias brought back with him the gall of a fish that he had used to cure Tobit’s blindness. This painting replicates a work now in the National Gallery in London, whose attribution has alternated between Rembrandt and his early pupil Gerrit Dou (Dutch, 1613–1675).
