Kicking Horse

c. 1645-1650
Aelbert Cuyp (Dutch (active Dordrecht), 1620–1691)
The landscape in this painting is based on a study from nature, a view of the Dutch town of Dordrecht seen across an inlet of the Maas River. In stark contrast to the naturalism of the background, the kicking horse in the foreground is based not on a life study but on a bronze cast made by Kaspar Gras in 1630.
