Departure of a Troop of Soldiers

Late 17th century
Attributed to David Teniers II (Flemish (active Antwerp and Brussels), 1610–1690)
This military scene set in a landscape is typical of the works by David Teniers favored by American collectors. They prized the light-hearted spirit of his scenes from everyday life, and his dashing virtuoso brushwork was seen as exceptionally fine and precious. Collectors throughout the centuries prized Teniers's subtle gradations of tone, which earned him the nickname "Silver" Teniers.
