Toilet of Venus

c. 1655-1656
David Teniers II (Flemish (active Antwerp and Brussels), 1610–1690) After Andrea Meldolla, called Schiavone (Italian, c. 1510–1563)
The painting upon which this oil sketch is based has not survived. Attributed to Palma il Giovane by Teniers along the bottom of this copy (since painted over), the original composition is actually a work by Andrea Schiavone. It appears in several scenes that Teniers made of the archduke's art gallery. The printmaker who translated this sketch into an etching, Theodor van Kessel (1620-after 1660), settled in Antwerp after 1652 and produced twenty-seven plates in the Theatrum Pictorium.
