European Painting before 1900, Johnson Collection Portrait of a Man After a lost painting dated 1536 Mid- 16th century Workshop or circle of Bartel Bruyn the Elder, German (active Cologne), 1493 - 1555 Oil on panel Currently not on view Cat. 749 John G. Johnson Collection, 1917 |
LabelBartel Bruyn the Elder was the leading protraitist in Cologne in the first half of the sixteenth century. This work, however, is in fact a copy after a 1536 portrait by Bruyn. Nevertheless, the copy's high quality and strong similarities in technique to authentic works by Bruyn suggest that it was made in the workshop of the artist or that of his son, Bartel the Younger. |
