Christ in the Tomb and the Virgin

c. 1377
Niccolò di Pietro Gerini (Italian (active Florence), first documented 1368, died 1415)
This Pietà, or the dead Christ mourned by his mother, once adorned a wealthy family's burial chamber in Florence's All Saints' Church, known as the Ognissanti. Situated above the tomb, it presented an especially poignant image of loss.
