American Art Summer Landscape Made in United States, North and Central America1876 George Inness, American, 1825 - 1894 Oil on canvas * Gallery 111, American Art, first floor E1924-3-9 The William L. Elkins Collection, 1924 |
LabelThe bright sunlight of Summer Landscape demonstrates Inness’s new interest in strong light effects. A view along Artist Brook in North Conway, New Hampshire, the painting incorporates sinuous tree contours—an expressive element the artist developed in Italy—and a distilled arrangement of broad passages of color, which were characteristic of his most dramatic Italian work. The trees at left screen out the distant mountains, constraining the view almost entirely to the larger blocks of color in the foreground and middle ground.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
