1659
Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (Dutch (active Amsterdam), 1621–1674)
Gerbrand van den Eeckhout excelled as a painter of religious and historical subjects. This work depicts an event from the conquest of New Carthage (Cartagena in modern-day Spain) by the Roman general Scipio Africanus in which Scipio releases a former hostage to her fiancé.
