These delicate, lyrical figures are closely related to winged beings on The Gates of Hell, particularly a group found in the upper portion of the left door. Despite their visual similarity with creatures on The Gates, The Benedictions seems to have been modeled in the 1890s and was intended to surmount a proposed monument honoring workers and “the glory of human effort.”
