The Meeting at the Golden Gate

Mid- 15th century
Master of Schloss Lichtenstein (Austrian, active 1440–1445)
Joachim and Anne, an elderly, barren couple, meet at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. They embrace at the news, delivered by an angel, that they will conceive a child, the future Virgin Mary. The Hebrew letter shin above their heads probably means "gate," referring both to the Golden Gate where the couple meet, and to the future cruciWxion of Christ at the gate of salvation.
