LabelJames Castle spent his life in silence. Born totally deaf, he never learned to read, write, speak, or use sign language. Living out his seventy-seven years on small subsistence farms near Boise, Idaho, Castle used art as a means to connect and communicate with those around him. Using readymade items, such as grocery bags and cigarette wrappers, and materials he concocted himself, like his combination of stove soot and saliva, Castle created almost three thousand small drawings and collages and two to three hundred handmade books.
