Tankard with Battle Scene
Charles Wingender & Brother, Haddonfield, New Jersey
Born and trained in the Westerwald region of Germany, Charles Wingender and his brother William immigrated to the United States in the 1880s and began a stoneware pottery business in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Their wares reflected the influence of current historicist trends in German stoneware production, while also incorporating American ornamental motifs. This tankard is decorated with a scene showing the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, a victory of the Germanic tribes over the ancient Romans, an important symbol of a unified German national identity and cultural history in the nineteenth century.
