Justin McCarthy's subjects reflect a vibrant range of interests, and he sometimes drew his imagery from newspapers and magazines. He painted this work after a 1966 fashion photograph by William Claxton (American, born 1927) that showed three models wearing animal prints by revolutionary designer Rudi Gernreich (American, born Vienna, 1922-1985). Gernreich is best known for his wild combinations of bold colors and patterns and for his creation of the topless swimsuit.
