High-buttoned kidskin boots inspired by the shoe styles of the 1890s were first shown by Schiaparelli and Maison Paquin at the summer presentations of the winter 1938–39 collections. Designed to be worn with formal costumes, Paquin’s black boots were presented with afternoon ensembles, while Schiaparelli’s bright yellow, green, or mauve versions were worn with matching gloves and contrasting gowns. The following season Schiaparelli offered a new look—ankle-high satin bootees that were scalloped around the top and closed with tiny mother-of-pearl buttons and a multicolored, striped leather version with platform sole. Both pairs were designed by André Perugia for Padova of Paris (Perugia designed much of Schiaparelli’s footwear). The pink bootees with pencil-thin green and white stripes were worn with Schiaparelli’s matching ankle-length satin haremskirted evening gown for winter 1939–40. Dilys E. Blum, from Shocking!
