Mug with the Monogram GR

Stoneware—a dense, high-fired ceramic—is especially suitable for holding liquids. The Westerwald region in Germany on the Rhine River was a prolific center for stoneware production from the seventeenth century onward and its handsome cobalt blue and gray wares were widely exported, not least to North America. This jug, made for the British market, represents a type of vessel traded to English colonists. Its incised and applied decorations consist of Germanic folk motifs.
