Border

c. 1650-1675
Artist/maker unknown, Italian
This raised needlepoint lace border could have been used to trim an alb (long robe worn by the clergy), church furnishings such as an altar frontal, or the clothes of a fashionable man or woman. Venetian needle lace at this time was characterized by curved branches connecting exotic floral and fruitlike forms such as the abstracted pomegranate seen here.
