A Hunter Resting in the Grotto at Cervaro

c. 1827-1830
Johann Christian Reinhart (German, 1761–1847)
Around 1810 Johann Christian Reinhart discovered the grotto of Cervaro while out hunting in the countryside near Rome. Soon afterward the cavernous interior of the grotto became the setting for a rowdy annual spring festival held by German artists in Rome, at which they sang comical songs, gave grandiose speeches, and awarded each other mock titles.
