Costume and Textiles Woman's Ensemble: Cape, Pants, and Clogs Made in Japan, Asia1973 Designed by Kansai Yamamoto, Japanese, born 1944 Cotton plain weave; lacquered wood, synthetic velvet Currently not on view 1974-3-5a--d Gift of Hess's Department Store, Allentown, 1974 |
LabelKansai's "bull's eye" cape is constructed from a full circle of fabric, much like the capes worn by samurai fire wardens. The design recalls a samurai archer's target, kasumi-mato, consisting of a series of concentric circles of varying width. The high-heeled clogs are modeled after traditional Japanese okobo, black lacquered platform geta with yellow straps. |
