Couch

1820-1830
Artist/maker unknown, American
This couch is one of a pair made for the Nashville, Tennessee, home of Philadelphia natives John and Mariah Shelby. Unlike a sofa, which has arms of the same height, a couch has one arm that rises higher than the other, as seen here.
