H. Granville Barker

c. 1900
Frederick H. Evans (British, 1853–1943)
Harley Granville Barker (British, 1877-1946) was an actor, playwright, critic, and prominent member of the Stage Society, a London-based group dedicated to the performance of banned and censored plays. Evans may have met Barker through fellow Stage Society member George Bernard Shaw (Irish, 1856-1950), the photographer's trusted friend and supporter. This image is typical of Evans's portrait style: a tightly cropped, soft-focus composition draws attention to Barker's expression, while the book he holds suggests his close relationship with the written word.
