With the creation of the Smithsonian Institution’s Bureau of American Ethnology in 1879, the first ethnological surveys of Pueblo Indian cultural traditions were conducted in the Southwest. Although John K. Hillers appears to have kept his distance from the performers by photographing them from above, the presence of outside spectators soon became so invasive that photography was banned at most ceremonies.
