Klinger's print is one of twelve in the series On Death, Part II, which treats death symbolically. A gust of wind has forced open a window of the hospital ward, allowing Death to fly into the room in the guise of a flock of menacing black crows. In vain a nurse tries to fend them off with her rosary as patients gesture in despair and clasp their hands in prayer.
