Wedding gowns were a particular specialty of Jeanne Lanvin, who began her career as a milliner and presided over a couture house also known for its children's dresses and mother-daughter ensembles. Lanvin's fashions often drew on the past, and she frequently used her own extensive collection of historic costume, costume books, and fashion plates for inspiration. This wedding ensemble, designed by Lanvin in 1925, evokes the feeling of early fifteenth-century Italian fashion; its silver lamé appliqué and embroidered feather design as well as its rounded bridal headdress recall Pisanello's well-known studies of Northern Italian women wearing gowns with winged, capelike sleeves and oversized turbans.
