Wardrobe from a Bedroom Suite

c. 1880
Made by Herter Brothers, New York (1865–1906)
Both Gustave Herter and his brother Christian trained overseas, and their decorating firm maintained offices in New York and Paris. This wardrobe reflects the interplay of international stylistic trends in the company’s designs. Its dark surface and lightwood inlay are reminiscent of Japanese lacquer wares and its rectilinear form and low-relief carving match styles popular among English furniture makers of the time.
