Clinker (Model for Relief for Brooklyn Memorial Arch)

1892
Thomas Eakins (American, 1844–1916)
When the sculptor William R. O'Donovan was commissioned in 1891 to make bronze equestrian reliefs of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant for the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Arch in Brooklyn, he asked Eakins to create models for the horses. After making this plaster model, Eakins scratched in the grid lines seen here to guide him in constructing the final, life-size plaster version, which was then cast in bronze.
