Woman's Cape

c. 1895
Designed by Emile Pingat (French, 1820–1901)
Emile Pingat's subtle use of fabrics and trims is seen in this short wool cape with satin appliqués. It is trimmed with gold braid, sequins, pearls, and crystal beads and is finished with a lace ruffle at the neck and front opening. Pingat's interest in the Orient is expressed in the embroidery pattern, which is inspired by Indian shawl designs. The cape dates from about 1895, just prior to the couturier's partnership in 1896 with A. Walles, who specialized in court dresses. It was worn by Mrs. William L. Barclay, the former Ann Wister, who may have purchased it for her bridal trousseau.
