Woman's Walking Suit: Tunic Top, Skirt, and Jacket

Fall 1959
Designed by James Galanos (American, 1924–2016)
Galanos's collection for fall 1959 captivated the fashion press. Designs such as this walking suit, consisting of a sculpted jacket with three-quarter-length sleeves worn over a tunic top and skirt, led the New York Times to comment: "His look is individual, inventive, often opulent, and sometimes prophetic." In October of that year, Galanos and designer Pauline Trigère were inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame, the highest designation awarded by the Coty American Fashion Critics, a group of some seventy fashion editors.
