Woman's Evening Dress

Spring/summer 1969
Designed by Gustave Tassell (American, 1926–2014)
The chemise, or sack dress, was reintroduced by Traina-Norell in 1950 and reemerged in 1957 and again in spring/summer 1969. Tassell's version explores contrasts-black and white, linen and silk, plain weave and satin-and gives this classic silhouette a totally modern look. The pared-down aesthetic it exemplifies garnered Tassell the Coty American Fashion Critics' Award--the fashion industry's "Oscar"--in 1961. His work was cited for its "serene purity of line in fashion, which only a few designers in the world are able to achieve."
