Bamboo

Early 20th century
Kim Jin-Woo (Korean, 1883–1950)
Kim Jin-Woo was a prolific artist who was known for his use of straight, knifelike brushstrokes when painting bamboo. Bamboo has long been admired by Chinese and Korean artists as a symbol of pliancy and security, as it bends to the storm and gives shelter to the tiger. Kim's works were especially favored by the patriotic Korean intellectuals in the early twentieth century due to his association with the Korean independence movement during the Japanese occupation.
