And There Is No Remedy (Y No Hai Remedio)

1810-1814, published 1863
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746–1828) Printed by Calcografía Nacional, Madrid Published by Real Academia de Nobles Artes de San Fernando
Executions of Spanish civilians by French firing squads were common during the Napoleonic occupation. Goya creates a strikingly modern composition with the cropped view of three gun barrels thrust into the scene from the right. By placing the blindfolded Spanish prisoner in the center foreground Goya heightens the viewer’s anticipation of the impending violence.
