Woman's Dress

c. 1800
Artist/maker unknown, American?
A resurgence of interest in the classical world in the late eighteenth century influenced feminine fashion in favor of raised waistlines and sheer, white cotton. The fine fabric, often imported from India, was frequently enhanced with whitework embroidery. In this example, contrastingly heavy cotton embroidery thread is used for the bands of floral sprigs and serpentine lines down the center front and around the train.
