La Piera del Bando. V.

c. 1738-1740
Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) (Italian (active Venice, Rome, and England), 1697–1768) Dedicated to Joseph Smith (British (active Venice), c. 1682–1770)
In this view of the Piazzetta San Marco, Canaletto illustrates the Piera (or Pietra) del Bando, located next to a column of the portico of the Basilica of San Marco. This fragment of ancient porphyry column (lower left), looted from Genoa during a thirteenth-century battle, was used as a proclamation stone from which important decrees were read.
